    • Aids and AdaptationsAids and adaptations are an essential part of living well with chronic illness and disability. It can be overwhelming to know which aids to choose or which adaptations might be most useful. Even more so for conditions which fluctuate or go through phases of activity and remission. By sharing honest reviews and tips, we hope to make choosing aids and adaptations easier; whether it’s for personal use at home or when requesting accommodations in public spaces.
    • BalanceThe Balance section of the blog is about finding our equilibrium.  Our health is made up of physical and mental wellbeing, which draws from a variety of components e.g. nutrition, habits, sleep quality, fulfilment and self expression, relationships, social and spiritual life, work (if we’re able to) and others. Many of these key foundation components have their own sections on the blog. Balance is vital because it’s only when we are in tune with each aspect of our health that we can fully experience wellness. In this section, you’ll find advice, reviews, recommendations and insights for helping to find balance, especially between physical and mental health. It also contains some of the more ‘fun’ posts. Working to improve our health can sometimes be hard work, so it’s important to also make time for enjoyment!

How gorgeous are these gift bags?! Not a sponsore How gorgeous are these gift bags?!

Not a sponsored post, just sharing because I’m super impressed with the quality of these: they can be re-used many times which is good for the environment and your wallet.

They’re from @rexlondonuk and come in a variety of designs from doves to dinosaurs (only a small selection is pictured here).

💡Do you microtask?💡 Our latest spoonie ener 💡Do you microtask?💡

Our latest spoonie energy saving tip involves microtasking, or breaking a task down into tiny steps and resting as often and for as long as needed.

Something like doing the laundry might be an overwhelming energy demand if you attempt to complete the task in one go. But if you split it into tiny actions and take as much rest as needed in between (whether that’s an hour or a day) you’ll get there eventually without bringing on a crash.

So, for the example of laundry 🧺 here are the individual steps. And you can rest between each, rest every few, or rest part way through a step (e.g. if putting in a whole load in one go requires too much energy).
1. Separate by colour and/or fabric
2. Put selected washing into basket
3. Take basket to washing machine
4. Put laundry into machine
5. Add detergent
6. Set programme

It’s better to take tiny steps with lots of rest even though the task takes much longer to complete than overdo it and spend several days recovering.

🦽 Ambulatory wheelchair users exist 🚶‍♀️

Many people don’t know that a lot of people who use wheelchairs can walk. Figures vary but a conservative amount is 1/3 of wheelchair users are ambulatory.

Does that mean they’re faking?

No, it can mean anything from they’re having a bad symptom day, to they can only walk 100metres and the distance they need to cover exceeds that.

If you’re struggling with your mobility - for any reason - please know you’re allowed to use mobility aids. You don’t need a formal diagnosis, you don’t need to opt to stay at home on days you need them just because you might not always need them. Ableism sees us feeling that relying on an aid is giving in, but it’s actually taking back control and doing the thing despite mobility difficulties.

Have you spotted any signs of spring yet? Blossom Have you spotted any signs of spring yet?

Blossom is starting to appear on fruit trees in Britain, daffodils and crocuses are out, and daylight is lasting just that little bit longer (and the clocks haven’t changed yet!).

The arrival of March has me reflecting on how I’m going to take care of myself this season.

As any visitors I have need to be socially distanced (covid landed me in hospital) we sit in the garden and it’s been too cold for that. So I’m looking forward to catching up with my treasured friends.

At Christmas I sent a couple of unexpected surprises to those who I knew had been struggling lately. I heard back that this had given them a real boost. So I’m going to do a couple more this month, it can be supportive to know that someone is thinking of you.

Finally project de-cluttering is continuing apace so I’m going to be introducing a bit of spring cleaning here and there depending on energy levels. Having a tidy space makes a huge difference to my mental health ☺️

And now I’ve shared this with you, it will keep me accountable!

Do you have any self care goals this month?

I’ve used @towerhealth products before and liked them, so thought I’d give these CBD patches a go and report back to you.

Imagine my surprise when I opened the first packet to find it completely empty! 😳

Luckily the second pack did contain the patches (swipe to see what they’re like).

Will be sharing how I get on with these so stayed tuned!

💗 From Cornwall with Love 💗 Is there anyth 💗 From Cornwall with Love 💗

Is there anything better on a Friday afternoon than a Cornish cream tea?

Swipe for a close up of the jammy, creamy goodness 😋

I’m delighted with the @thecornishcompany gluten free cream tea box. Packed with scones, smuggler’s brew tea, strawberry jam, clotted cream and fudge, this is an absolute delight!

The scones were the best gluten free ones I’ve tasted (not rock hard or powdery) and the jam and cream topping and tea, all top notch! The gf clotted cream fudge was a lovely extra and so moreish.

Highly recommended to any coeliacs wanting a lovely treat which is free from.

This is not an ad/sponsored post. I received this for my birthday from my bestie and wanted to share because it’s so tasty and coeliac safe 🥰

And remember… for an authentic Cornish cream tea it’s jam *then* cream 😉

💗 why is change uncomfortable? 💗 Change can 💗 why is change uncomfortable? 💗

Change can be challenging and when we grow it can often be uncomfortable. We are all part of different communities and when we outgrow a community it can feel like we’re being disloyal by leaving them behind. Sometimes that disloyalty can even be guilt, and in the liminal space (period of transition) we may feel isolated before we find a new community.

As we don’t like feeling guilty, or isolated it actually feels easier to stay where we are. So, how much you can change will be influenced by how much you can tolerate feelings of disloyalty, guilt and/or isolation.

This is a nugget of wisdom from the book “The Art of Enough” by Becky Hall. I wish I could share every new concept I’m coming across! Doing the work that this book provides a foundation for is truly transformative.

A full review of the book will be up on the blog in March. So stay tuned!

🔑 Have you considered a key safe? 🔑 Today o 🔑 Have you considered a key safe? 🔑

Today on the blog I’m looking at the Defender Security Products combination key safe. I received the key safe of my choice in exchange for an honest review.

A key safe is a little safe for your house keys which is mounted on the outside of your property. It means that you can keep your home securely locked, whilst allowing others (e.g. paramedics, carers) access as needed.

This is perfect for those occasions when you’re too poorly to answer the door. If you need to call 999 you can give the operator your key safe code and they will pass it to the paramedics meaning no delays and no damage from them breaking the door.

Head over to the blog (link in bio and on stories/blog highlights) to read about why a key safe is a great idea. And it’s not just for spoonies, it’s also ideal for keeping keys safe for holiday lets, if your cleaner comes when you’re at work etc.

💙 Raising vital funds for @meassociation 💙 💙 Raising vital funds for @meassociation 💙

This year for my birthday I’m doing a fundraiser on Facebook for The ME Association. It’s my first time doing one of these and I’m hoping to raise £250 for the charity which has provided critical support to me as I navigated a life changing diagnosis.

My ME was very severe at one point (I was too weak to lift a fork or even swallow food) and that lasted 2 years. I’m now in the severe to moderate category through a variety of interventions (fixing my sleep, adjusting my diet, prescription medications, extensive meditation, and mastering pacing which was the hardest thing to learn).

No one knows what causes ME/CFS and there are no treatments or a cure. Much more research is needed for this disease which causes those who endure it to have issues with multiple systems in the body, pain, fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, post exertional malaise, pain, fatigue and a very low quality of life.

The link to the fundraiser is on my stories and the fundraising highlights tab. I am extremely grateful for every donation, no amount is too small to make a difference.

Not only is a key safe great for energy saving but Not only is a key safe great for energy saving but it also ensures safety and security.

A key safe is a little safe for your keys, which is accessed via a code. It’s usually mounted outside your door so that anyone with the code (emergency services, carer etc) can access your home.

Perfect if you’re too poorly to answer the door, or if you’re in hospital and need someone to pop to your home to collect some bits.

Also useful for non-spoonies, e.g. if you have a cleaner come round whilst you’re at work, if you own a holiday let, if you want a spare key available securely etc.

The model shown here is the Defender Security Combination key safe which retails at £15.95. It was awarded silver in Real Homes’ Best Key Safe Guide 2022🥈

💷 Putting my money where my mouth is 💷 Towa 💷 Putting my money where my mouth is 💷

Towards the end of last year I was lucky enough to receive socks from @cosyfeet for my Christmas gift guide.

I was super impressed with them, they’re so comfy and great at adjusting to temperatures so my feet were never too hot or cold. They’re diabetic friendly and recommended by NHS specialists. I gave them a strong endorsement.

Today I’ve received a bundle of socks which I ordered online as I really need more pairs of these game changing socks!

I’m sharing this post to show that anything I do endorse on my blog is done so authentically and honestly. Only if I love it enough to buy it myself does that mean I love it enough to recommend it to others.

If you have #LongCovid #MECFS #PostViralFatigue #Burnout or any other form chronic fatigue you need to check out #TheFatigueBook by Lydia Rolley out now from @hhealthbooks

I *love* this book for so many reasons, but here are my top 4:

#1 It goes deep -
this isn’t just the standard “eat well, hydrate, pace your activity, get enough sleep” advice (although there are good tips for that) it does a 360 scan of the fatigue landscape. Want to socialise but lack the energy? Carrying guilt for needing help from others? Too brain fogged to work out how to minimise fatigue on a trip to the shops? All this and more is covered.

#2 It’s written in an accessible format -
We’re talking easy language, short pieces of text, key points in grey boxes, questions to guide the reader and tailor the advice, diagrams, illustrations and almost every tip covers only 2 pages max.

#3 Themed chapters and tips index -
Not only can you tailor the advice to your particular needs (the 100 tips are organised into 11 thematic chapters) but you can find what you need easily due to the tip index. I’ll be referring to different aspects over the course of my recovery journey depending on what I need when.

#4 The advice works -
Written by an expert with long-standing and first hand experience. There are so many useful tools, and it’s bang up to date so no perpetuating of damaging therapies like GET.

Geared more towards those with moderate to milder forms, but a lot of the advice can be applied to those with more severe forms too. Swipe to see some of my personal favourite insights.
